Acetone As An Additive

Friend of mine at work heard about my dirty carbs (94 VF750C, see other threads ad nauseum) and suggested that I try acetone. Says he has been using it in his cages for years. Says it's the main ingredient in a lot of fuel additives.

Just figuring the price of Sea Foam or Techron versus a gallon of acetone, it seemed like a very maggot-priced alternative.

Thoughts? Experiences?

  1. It's good to see the netloons have found Wikipedia. Their delusions should make for interesting edits.

Feel free to add acetone to your tank. After that does nothing, go buy some Techron.

If the *active* ingredient in Techron was acetone, Chevron would have a hell of a time patenting it. And keeping it in the gas they sell out of their stations, since acetone has a rather low boiling point (130 F--for comparison, petroleum distillates, which is on the Techron label, has a BP of 300 F).

Compared to actually pulling the carbs and soaking them, Techron is most definitely a 'maggot-friendly alternative. Though, you don't get the fringe benefit of huffing a couple of quarts of brake cleaner.

  2. Bad idea IMHO. I don't put anything but gasoline in any of my 4 vehicles fuel tanks. If you have dirty carbs, you need to clean them.

    just my 2¢
