Sold It


Jezebel has been sold to the highest bidder. After four years and 16,000 miles, it's time to say goodbye.

I listed her on eBay, and had my share of flakes making bids, demanding special treatment, and ultimately cancelling bids.

But in the end, she appears to have sold.

Sale Prep - Honda Magna

I'm finally getting the Honda Magna ready for sale on eBay.

Based on the advice of fellow-riders, I removed most of the expensive farkles (accessories) which I had added to the bike. I'll sell those separately.

Then, I decided I needed to clean the carbs? Why? Why did I do this to myself when the bike was running well enough? I don't know. I was unhappy with a little off-idle hesitation when I throttled up when the bike was cold. It seemed to me to need a carb cleaning.

But, what a lengthy and painful process for a Honda V4. I was cursing Soichiro himself as I was removing the carbs.

Getting them cleaned wasn't too bad. Assuming I didn't mess something up or make something worse in the process.

Getting the carbs back on the bike wasn't too tough either. The carbs on the 3rd generation Magna, with its modified carb boots, are much easier to seat than the 1st generation Magna.

I'll get the air filter back on, and then the gas tank, and then eagerly await the moment of truth. If I've fixed the off-idle hesitation, I'll call it good, and start polishing her up for photographs.

Riding the Magna, Anew


How strange it was to ride my Magna again, after having become accustomed to the ST1300. Since the Magna hasn't sold yet, and is licensed and registered, I figured I would ride it to work. I want to keep it happy until I'm able to sell it. Here are my thoughts on riding my old bike anew.

One. What a rush. What a quick bike off the line. With no windshield, the blast of air was exhilarating.

Two. How did I ever endure that seating position? Feet so far forward compared to the ST. All my weight on my spine. I worried the ST would uncomfortable. Now I see it's more comfortable than the Magna.

Three. Turn baby turn. What the heck is wrong with the steering geometry on this bike. The ST turns effortlessly. The worse turning bike I've ever ridden was the V Rod Muscle. By comparison to the two . . . ST and V Rod . . . The Magna is squarely in the middle. Better than the Harley at turning a corner, but cumbersome compared to the ST.

Four. A chain isn't so bad.  I welcome the maintenance free aspect of the ST's shaft drive, but I have noticed some drive-train lash.  A feeling of sloppiness in transitions from deceleration to acceleration.  That, I guess, comes with the territory for shaft drives.  The Magna, by comparison, with its chain drive, is smooth in transition from deceleration to acceleration.  Like a dream.

Wiring Your Bike For Heat -- Heated Gear Installation

Heated gear extends my riding season.  I'm able to ride comfortably down to the freezing point with heated gear.  Without it, I'm shivering below fifty degrees.

The heated gear involves a special jacket, worn under my regular riding gear, which is laced with high-resistance wires which generate heat when an electrical current passes through them... just like an electric blanket.



The gear is powered from the bike's battery.  This requires installation of a special wiring harness which attaches to the battery and provides a plug in for the heated gear.

In my case, I have a Gerbing heated jacket, and so have also purchased the Gerbing wiring harness and temperature controller.  These are each sold separately.



To install the wiring harness, you'll need access to the battery.

The exact steps for accessing the battery will vary from bike to bike.  Check your owner's manual.  But usually, accessing the battery requires removing the seat and possibly one of the side-covers.

1.  Remove the seat.  

For the Honda ST1300, this involves opening the saddlebag-bracket lock on the left side of the bike, and pulling the seat release lever. 


Pull the seat slightly up and to the rear of the bike to release.  

For the Honda Magna, this involves removing the three seat bolts (stock seat) or one seat bolt (after-market seat). 

2.  Remove the side cover.

For the Honda ST1300, there are three bolts holding the side cover in place. 


For the Honda Magna, this step is not required. 

3.  Disconnect the battery


Remove the bolts from the battery terminals, one at a time.  The black wire of the wiring harness goes over the negative terminal of the battery; red over the positive terminal. 

4.  Position the plug

Thread the wiring harness carefully so that the plug is accessible under the edge of the seat.  On the Honda Magna, the most logical place for the plug seemed to be the front edge of the seat, since there was a ready-made notch between the gas tank and the seat.



For the Honda ST1300, given the shape of the seat, it was easier to position the plug at the left side of the seat.



Just make sure the wiring doesn't block the seat's locking or clamping mechanism.  And keep the end of the plug from the engine or exhaust.




Replace the side cover, then the seat, and you're ready to go.

Memphis Fats for the Magna

I previously had a Memphis Slims 17" windshield installed on the Magna.

With the 17" Slims installed, I had quite a bit of buffeting and I felt the windshield was too low for my height. I looked into a taller Memphis Slim but 17" is the tallest they make. To get a taller shield, I have to move to the Memphis Fats. The Fats comes in a wider variety of heights. I ordered a 21" Memphis Fats windshield off eBay, and installed it today.

The bike-specific mounting brackets are the same between the Slims and the Fats, so I reused them. Remove four bolts from the shield and remove the brackets from the Slims.

I noticed the Fats are thicker, more substantial.

The big difference between the Slims and the Fats is the width. The Slims are about 18" across at their widest point, the Fats are about 22". They really have the same overall shape and style -- that iconic "Cruiser Windshield" look that some folks call "The Tombstone".

The shield height is measured in height above the headlight. The instructions say that the top of the shield should be just below the line of sight. That seems like an arbitrary and difficult-to-measure specification -- it's hard for me to visualize when sitting in the garage, what my line of sight will be running down the road.

I know I'm just overthinking it, but I did hem and haw quite a bit about getting the right height. The real issue is that you can't really tell how it's going to feel until you get the bike at highway speed. At that point, you've already made your purchase and you're probably stuck with the result. At the very least I've got a time-consuming "Return Materials Authorization" process to deal with, extra shipping, extra waiting for a replacement shield.

A four-inch jump in height is significant, I might've tried a two-inch increase first, but had a feeling I really needed a taller shield.

Kuryaken Dually Pegs

I just received my Kuryakyn Dually Pegs, which I installed as passenger pegs on my Honda Magna VF750C. I'm happy to report that Kuryakyn's Dually Pegs do fit nicely as passenger pegs on the Magna, and in fact they retract up and out of the way, clearing the side covers nicely. I had been concerned about clearance, since the Dually Pegs is a large peg with a broad surface. There isn't a lot of spare room, and it won't work if the peg surface is sloped aggressively up or down. But it is a very natural fit and looks great on the bike.

The chrome finish was superb, it lives up to the hype. There were no instructions included in the package, but installation was fairly intuitive.

The pegs I bought required separate, bike-specific adaptors.

Here are the step by step instructions:

A. Remove the stock passenger pegs.

1. Remove the side cover.

2. Using a pair of needle nose pliers, pull the cotter pin from the pivot bolt. When I did this I broke the cotter pin. This always happens to me when removing cotter pins, so I already had an assortment of them to choose from, in a "Miscellaneous Fastener Pack" that I purchased at the local auto parts store.

3. Slide the pivot bolt out of the bracket. Be careful to catch and retain both the pivot bolt and the small washer; you'll need both to install the new pegs.

B. Install the Kuryakyn pegs.

1. First, test fit the pegs to the adapters. There is a hex-head bolt which runs through the peg, which fastens into the tapered stem of the adapter. Tighten this bolt until the tapered stem of the adapter mates with the receptacle in the peg. Leave it loose enough to turn the adapter freely within the peg. You'll make the final adjustments while the pegs are on the bike.

2. Slip the bushing into the adapter. This metal collar narrows the diameter of the hole drilled in the adapter, and allows for a tight fit against the pivot bolt. One slipped in easily with just pressure from my fingers. The other required a few careful taps from a hammer.

3. There is a smaller hex head bolt, about 1/4 inch long, which screws into the end of the adapter, opposite the peg. This adjuster allows to fine tune the angle of the footpeg when it is folded down for use. Insert this bolt into the adaptor, and tighten until all but 1/8" shows. You'll make final adjustments to this bolt once the pegs are on the bike.

4. Check the orientation of the adaptor. The rounded corner of the adaptor should be facing up, the squared corner should be facing down. This allows the adaptor and peg to pivot up when not in use.

5. The adaptor includes about eight different spring washers which help hold the pegs tight to minimize wiggling, and to provide enough tension to keep the pegs from falling from upright to "in use" position. The washers are shaped like the letter "D", about 1" across, and though they are all the same thickness, are bowed to varying degrees. This "bowing" forms a spring action which clamps against the adapter for a tight fit. I choose a spring washer which was tight enough to feel snug, so that it required a little effort to pull the peg down from upright to "in use" position. Place the flat side of the "letter D" toward the flat back of the bracket. This will keep the corners of the "letter D" tucked away toward the frame of the bike, and will hold the spring washer in place.

6. Slide the pivot bolt through the hole. Carefully test the pivot action of the peg. Make sure that the peg clears the frame when folding up.

7. Return the washer to the pivot bolt, and install a fresh cotter pin and bend each prong of the pin around the bolt.

8. Test the orientation of the peg ensuring that the angle front-to-back is okay. Tighten the hex-head bolt which runs through the length of the footpeg.

9. Test the orientation of the peg left-to-right ensuring that the angle is okay. If it sags too much, you'll have to back the hidden hex head bolt (the small one on the curved face of the adapter) a few turns. If it angles upward, you'll have to tighten the hidden hex-head bolt. You might have to adjust it a few times to be perfectly satisfied.

10. When you're done fine tuning the fit of the pegs, replace the side covers. You're done!

Taming The Beast

Bob is the creator of the "Magnaceptor" a Honda Magna with an Interceptor motor. He recently had it professionally tuned, and wrote this report:

I can't believe I rode 750 miles to have a bike dyno'd.

My reasoning was - it's a Honda dealer and they have a Factory Pro dyno which is supposedly very precise. In the end - it was a long, hard ride, 250+ miles of hard, windy thunderstorm rain (and hail), but worth it! The T bar and forward peg ape position is more comfortable than stock, but after 6 continuous hours of riding leaves the wrists and legs begging for redemption or even a mere shred of mercy. I'm still hurting.

Back to the dyno. Initial runs showed about 73hp and 44ft lbs. I had two cylinders lean (one extremely so) and the other two close. The horsepower curve was sad. It climbed, peaked out, then sloped down past 10,000. The typical VFR will climb past 12,000 on its way to 100hp. Not too bad for a blind tune.

The bike would run on the dyno at idle in 6th gear, and would pull, but given time the motor would have burnt up from being too lean.

It took the guys 6 hours, yes, 6 long hours to tune this mother bumper. Turns out a previous owner of the donor VFR had installed a dyno jet kit. The dyno jet kit required drilling carb components, thus making it a permanent fixture, or at least one would think.

At some time this kit was replaced with original parts - rendering the carbs ineffective until a dyno jet kit was reinstalled. At this time I would like to point out that the person who replaced those parts is a son of a bitch. The bike ran, but didn't perform well, and didn't respond correctly to tuning.

The mechanics cracked open the carbs, noticed it had been drilled, and figured this out. Luckily on their clearance rack, marked way down to cost was....one lone dyno jet jet kit for the vf750c 1994-2003 magna. Granted, this is VFR interceptor equipment, but we all know it's basically the same stuff. They used it, and it worked (thank god). In the end the whole process was $250 more expensive because of this.

After 5 hours of dyno jet drama and fiddling, the afternoon heat had set in. The temperature in the dyno room (combined with heat from tuning the bike) was nearing 100 degrees. Relative humidity was super high due to thunderstorms in the area. Under these conditions the final dyno runs were numeric failures. I don't have reliable power numbers, but I do have reliable power graphs. The graphs show increasing horsepower throughout the entire rpm range, and a torque peak right in the middle.

Where horsepower used to drop off it slopes upward. The tuner estimated that it might dyno very close to, or even over 90hp under better conditions. The best it would do Tuesday was 3hp over what I brought in - a paltry 78. Stock horsepower on the magna is....78. This was my first dyno experience, and I was very displeased to leave with such poor numbers. I had mixed feelings though because the motor sounded very strong both on the dyno and on the street when the mechanic test rode it.

The weather didn't cooperate, but they did dial the bike in. I didn't lay into it much on the return trip because of rain, and fatigue - and I didn't want the bike to explode (the dyno is a pretty rough place). I noticed a substantial decrease in fuel economy - low 30's on the first few tanks afterward, which was annoying.

On the way home from work today I gave it a test. The bike tells a different story. It pulls and Pulls and PULLS!! It's a riot in the high rpm range. I mean, it's not slow on acceleration down low, but it hits 9,000ish and wakes up in a way that lifts the front end (not in a wheelie) if you don't miss second gear! It IS really strong - stronger than I've ever experienced!

So I'm excited - plus, barring mathematical error, this last tank netted 37mpg.

Sometime this fall, on a cooler day, I'll take it in for a dyno run and share some numbers. Until then...it's a certifiable sleeper. Go ahead...take it for a ride!

Holy Smokes

What a difference those 105 jets and needle shims make. I rode TRHB (tm) to work today and .... holy wow.

I didn't notice the flat spot at 4000 rpm ... until it was gone. Smooth power delivery all the way up to the top of the tach. I could swear I have more low end torque too ... more grunt at 2000.

I'm definitely running rich. I can smell it.

Bob has an exhaust analyzer that he offered to let me use. It will let me fine tune the mixture screws. Thankfully this can be done without taking the carbs off the bike and apart for each adjustment.

I backed mine out to 2 3/4 turns per the jet kit instructions.

It's great to be back ... and running better than ever.

K&N Filter?

Okay, so I admit -- should have thought of this before I rejetted the carbs, but should I install the high-flow K&N air filter to go with my Dave Dodge shims and jets? Jets are up to 105 from stock 100. Exhaust is still stock and I plan to keep it that way, unless free Vance & Hines pipes are parachuted into my back yard.

It's running rich now.

And, holy cow, the K&N Filter costs more than the Jet kit.

After yesterday's strange behavior (tach suddenly would not drop below 8k) I tore into the bike looking for clues this morning. When I took the carb rack off, and turned it over, I noticed that the throttle plates were indeed being held open.

Then I heard something fall out of the carb rack and onto the garage floor. It was a metal "nut" mounted to a rectangular piece of sheet metal. I recognized it as one of the mounts that hold the airbox to the frame. I examined the throttle plates again, and they were fully closed.

This little nut had lodged externally in the levers and runners that connect all four throttle mechanisms together. It had held the throttle plates open.

My theory is that this bracket was dislodged when I had the little wipeout in March (slipping in an oil slick at a stop light). It must've rattled around in the "V", under my carbs for a few months, and jiggled its way into place wheere it interfered with my throttle.

That was easy!

Well, while I had the carbs off, I installed that Dave Dodge needles shim and jets that I bought off Charley Sutton at SME '07. I've been waiting, figured I'd install them next time I tore into my carbs, or next time I got bored and wasn't able to ride. Well, today was the day ... I was holding the carb rack in my hands, I may as well go for it.

The 105 jets and shims installed easy as pie. The only troubles were self inflicted, alzheimer-type troubles like taking apart the float bowls I'd already worked on. I can't remember what I just did, especially when both halves of the carb rack look so similar. I had to mark the ones I'd worked on with a sharpie!

I found a half-inch diameter blob of goo under one of the diaphrams. At first it looked like some ingested air cleaner foam. But I've got a stock cloth air cleaner, totally intact. The blob smeared easily and uniformly ... no indication of foam bits. Not sure what it was, perhaps a bit of goo that was missed from when I cleaned the carbs in '07. I didn't see anything else like it anywhere else in the carbs.

Everything back together, and it took a little cranking to get it to start. But it roared to life. I swear the sound is different, just from the jetting, but I could be nuts. It could be just that sweet V4 sound rushing back into my ears.

I know the real proof is in the driving, but I haven't had the chance yet. Maybe after the kids are in bed.

Burr Oak Trip Report

My second successful Burr Oak trip is behind me.

I use the annual pilgrimage to Glouster, OH as a time to reflect on my riding career. The trip to Glouster itself cuts through a rich cross-section of my life...

In 2006 I made my first attempt at Burr Oak, aboard Raven, my 1984 VF500C. It was my first out of town trip. I'd been commuting on it for one entire season before this attempt. That trip ended with the death of Raven in Dayton, OH, on Saturday morning. And, a tail-between-my-legs trip back home aboard a trailer. Had to call my wife to come pick me up in Dayton. Honey, bring the trailer.

By the time the next year rolled around, I had already bought, put 6000 miles on, and sold a 1982 Goldwing Interstate. I had just ridden it on an 800 mile trip a few weekends earlier. Foremost in my mind last year was how inadequate the VF750C was to touring, compared to the Wing. It did shine in the twisties, though.

By the time this year's trip rolled around I had made some improvements to the tour-ability of the VF750C. After Charlie let me try his Mustang Seat last year, I bought one for myself this year. And, I added a memphis shades windshield.
I still envy Charlie's forward controls and pullback risers -- ergonomic enhancements that would probably suit my 6' 0", 80-year-old frame. (True, on the clock I've only got 41 years, but under the hood, I've got about 80 years. So says my orthopedic surgeon...)
Departure
The trip over was less painful than the year before. It's only May, so I opted for leather instead of mesh -- a decision that I regretted. I left at 9 am on Friday, and slabbed to Shelbyville, IN on I-74. I wanted to try the eastern part of Indiana on a locally-favored motorcycle road, IN-44. Turns out that *most* of IN-44 east of Shelbyville, IN is unremarkable -- the best parts of IN-44 are west of Shelbyville and are the subject of other trip reports of mine. It was straight-shot "prairie run" from Shelbyville to Rushville to near Connersville.

East of Connersville to Liberty, IN things got just a little more interesting. Nothing like Athens County Ohio, but not a straight shot either. At the State Line, IN-44 becomes OH-725, which I took east. It was interesting for a while, through Camden and Gratis.

However my high hopes for OH-725 went mostly unfulfilled. My hope was to avoid the superslab this time, and try to pick an interesting non-interstate route. I wouldn't say that I succeeded in that quest -- OH-725 goes through basically south Dayton suburbs; I'd have made better time on I-70.

At Spring Valley a short jaunt north on US-42, then US-35 east from Xenia all the way to Chillicothe. So much for my desire to avoid superslabs -- alas US-35 is a limited access divided highway, interstate riding without the formal designation.

Londonderry, OH

US-50 east from Chillicothe to Athens was better -- mostly 2 lane, with things getting twistier as I headed east. Athens was a gas stop, and then north on OH-13 to Glouster, and OH-78 east to Burr Oak.

I arrived right in time for food. Parked the bike, took off the helmet, gloves and jacket and stood in chow line. Apparently since "His Philness" is known for showing up at dinnertime, folks joked that at first they thought I was him, based solely on the timing of my arrival.

Familiar faces and warm welcomes from folks I hadn't seen since last year. Met Mike Seidel and Pete Karasz, my cabin-mates. Despite my inquiries about "beer on bike" I arrived without a drop. I think I was more concerned about arriving in time for dinner when i past the convenience store in Glouster -- I didn't procure any liquid refreshment. After the meal, Carl Custer saw my sad and sober countenance, correctly surmised the problem and the remedy. Promptly appeared with three bottles of his personal stash. My disposition improved greatly as I quenched my thirst.

I heard tales I hadn't heard before, about RDS's encounter with drunken dope-smoking hostess in BF Nova Scotia. Saw pretty pink sparkles and smoke bombs by the fire, courtesy Rooster. Not sure why I was fall-down drunk after just four beers -- but I was. I staggered off to bed. Perhaps being dehydrated on the trip made me more susceptible. Perhaps the approaching head cold I didn't want to admit I was getting. At any rate, I was still wise enough to avoid that nasty home-brew that was being passed around.

Next morning was scattered showers early in the morning. Breakfast and waiting for the rain to pass. Some attempt at breaking and entering first by Ozzy -- who was locked out of his cabin -- and later by Adventure Ed, who was thin enough to be passed through the window into the kitchen, from there to unlock the front door of the cabin. Good times.

Somehow, in the waiting for the rain to clear, and not being sure where to go, I turned around and found myself the lone interested rider. Others had left already, by the time I was ready, those who were still around declared they were not going to ride at all.

McConnellsville, OH

Unable to drum up any interest in an eastward ride, I took off solo toward McConnellsville on OH-78. I lunched at the Blue Belle diner in McC, and decided that Ohio pork tenderloins cannot hold a candle to the ones in Indiana. (For Pork Tenderloins, I recommend the D&D Restaurant in Franklin, IN ... which is on that great Indiana road, IN-44, but I digress.)

The wait staff at Blue Belle was, however, better looking than their Indiana counterparts. Having filled my stomach, I again turned east along OH-78 all the way to Caldwell. Fueled up in Caldwell, backtracked along OH-78 west to OH-83 south, through Waterford to Watertown, to pick up tha wonderful discovery of a road, OH-676. This road reminds me of Brown County Indiana -- you can be traveling in four directions at once -- up, down, left and right.

Last year I had been warned off of OH-555, and had been -- probably inaccurately -- convinced that it was beyond my skill levels. This year I knew I was up for it. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. There was, of course, no way I could keep up with Mr. Ross or Mr. Ryder, or probably 75% of the folks there, but still I knew I could ride a little of OH-555, and have a blast doing it.

I rode OH-555 from OH-676 north through Chesterhill, up to where I picked up OH-78 again.

This time, before I returned to camp, I gassed up in Glouster, and found a 6-pack of Sam Adams. (Wrapped, on advice of the group, discretely in brown paper before being strapped to the pillion seat.)

I stowed the beers in the fridge on my return to camp, and went to look for Katherine, who had the night before graciously offered me a ride on her pre-wrecked VFR.

Had she changed her mind, having seen me in my drunkenness the night before?

No.

"Do you still want to ride the VFR?" she asked, then, looking askance at me, added "...assuming you haven't had anything to drink yet..."

I said, "No I haven't, because I was hoping to ride that bike."

I hopped aboard the VFR, and had what Ryder so aptly describes as a "Where The F*** are the Footpegs" moment.

Compared to the Magna, the VFR handles like a dream. It is controlled by pure thought. A merely incline of the head causes the bike to steer in the direction I want. I can see the appeal of this. I immediately felt better in my lower back -- the rearset pegs tipped my pelvis and relieved pressure on the low back.

"Hey, this could work! This could be my next bike!"

But after a mere 10 miles -- west on OH-78 and north on OH-13 -- the pain began in the shoulders. The ergonomics, even of the so-called "Barcolounger" of sport bikes, will not work for my 40/80-year-old frame.

I came back with a grin on my face. Phil sees me dismounting the VFR and said, "Have we made a convert of you?"

Unfortunately no. Still searching for suitable ergonomics. Upright seating with a slight rearset to the pegs looks like it might do it. Not sure if that puts me in Triumph Speed Triple territory, or BMW R1200R territory, or GoldWing territory. I already know the Wing ergos suit me ... though not its overall demeanor.

Delicious dinner -- again. Afterwards, though I was feeling under the weather, I looked around long enough to find Carl Custer, and introduce him to the Sam Adams I had bought in Glouster. "Thanks, Carl, for sharing beer last night with a fellow maggot in his time of need!"

I finally succombed to the head cold I'd been trying to deny I was getting. Saturday night's celebration was cut short, I headed to bed.

Pete K was gone before I even thought about awakening. Next morning by the time I arrived, breakfast was nearly vaccuumed up but I did still manage to eat well. Last night's bratwurst had become this morning's breakfast sausage.

The Last Breakfast

Mike S was a gracious host at the cabin, gave me a spare set of earplugs and some cold remedy tablets he had in his personal stash. Mike took off, I downed cold tablets and black coffee, trying to wake up enough for the trip home. At 11:00 I pointed Jezebel toward the west, and left Burr Oak again for another year.

Plotting A Course

Leaving Burr Oak I headed west on OH-78. I was determined to find better roads westbound than I did in my eastbound trek. OH-78 did not disappoint. OH-78 to Nelsonville, a short jaunt north on US-33 to catch OH-278 and head west again. OH-278 to OH-56 west, through the Hocking Hills area. A good ride, despite the unexpected road work and sitting and waiting in full gear on hot asphault for 10 minutes. Ugh.

Heading Home

OH-56 was good up to Laurelville. I stopped for gas in Laurelville, and pulled into a parking spot next to a Virago. The Virago's owner, in his shorts, flip-flops, T-Shirt, and no helmet, eyed me in my head-to-toe gear. I expected some snide comment, but instead, he spotted the "Honda V-Four Magna" emblem on the side of the tank.

"A V4!" he exclaimed, like he had never heard of the concept before.

"Yep!" I said.

"Wow," he said, "That must have incredible power!"

I searched his face for the slightest inkling of sarcasm and saw none. He gave every indication of being truly impressed. I wanted to say, "You think a 750cc V4 is impressive?!?! This is the smallest steed in the modern-era V4 herd! You should try an Interceptor, or an ST."

But instead, I said, "It's fun! A sportbike engine in a cruiser chassis." More or less true, and an easy catch-phrase to toss out there, for the sake of conversation.

"Wow, cool!" he said. "When did Honda come up with a V4!?!"

I cannot fathom this. How can you not have heard of a V4? Again I searched his face for sarcasm.

"In the early 80's," I replied. I gave him a brief overview, through the demise of the Magna in 2003 and the current king of the Honda V4 Hill, the ST1300.

"Wow," he said, "Leave it to Honda to come up with that kind of innovation."

"Have a good ride!" I said. He pawed the kick stand of his Virago with his flip-flop, fired up his -- what? 30 HP V-Twin - and was on his way, east.

With a booted heel I kicked up my own kick stand, jabbed the starter with my gloved thumb, and headed west.

OH-56 became a boring "prairie run" West of Laurelville. From there, I continued west on OH-56 to Circleville, then US-22 west through Washington Court House, all the way to Wilmington. In Wilmington I picked up OH-73, and took that through the Caesar Creek area, to Springboro, Carlisle, and Middletown. This was still suburban-sprawl running, but better than my eastward trek through Miamisburg on OH-725. In Middletown, picked up OH-744 west to OH-122. North on OH-122 to my old friend OH-725, at Gratis.

West on OH-725 to IN-44, and basically retraced my steps back to Shelbyville, IN, where I picked up I-74 for the jaunt home. All told, just shy of 700 miles. A great way to spend the weekend!

He did it!!! The birth of the "Magnaceptor"

Friend and fellow Magna rider Bob finished his winter project -- transplanting a motor from a VFR into a Magna.



He calls his creation a VFR750C -- Part VFR Interceptor, Part VF750C Magna. The Magnaceptor.

By his own reckoning, he spent 3 months on the project. He mated the Magna heads and carbs to an Interceptor's motor. He spent 2 weeks of evenings wiring the harness. He used VFR wiring harness and ignition.

Aftermarket Exhaust

As you know my formerly lean-running Next-Gen Magna blackened its stock exhaust.

I'm thinking about replacing them with aftermarket pipes.

Friend of mine with the same model bike bought Jardines. Significantly lighter weight than stock, he said. Handled much better -- noticeably different in curves, he said.

But ultimately gave up because the pipes were too darn loud.



I don't want loud. But I wouldn't mind less weight. (Talking about the bike...)

First Impressions: Honda Magna VF750C

This post is a flash back from one year ago, when I first rode the V45. At that time I combined the trip report with a discussion of tuning issues

I bought my VF750C during a snowstorm in February, and it has sat forelorn in the garage since then. Until today.

Sure is a lot easier to move around and back up than the Wing.



Compared to the Gold Wing GL1100's square-cut "tractor transmission", it slides into gear like butter. I did find myself tapping the left footpeg as though it was the shifter. The Wing's pegs are further back than the Magna, to clear that big wide F4 engine . The Magna's controls are farther forward than my legs are trained to expect, but that retraining will come soon enough.

Yet, compared to other cruisers like the Victory Kingpin, the Magna controls are mid-mount or standard position.

This bike is more fun using the first 2 gears than the GL1100 is using all 5. Silky smooth motor from lugging all the way to redline. The GL1100 is not particularly rough, but does chatter and complain when being lugged, and does seem to complain when you whack the throttle. The V4, by comparison, begs you to whack it.

I can roll it on in 2nd gear and have to hold on tight to keep from sliding off the back. I am grinning ear to ear and I haven't left my subdivision.

This bike handles like a dream. It's 250 lbs lighter than the Wing, it feels like a feather by comparison. It flops right over in a turn, it doesn't mind leaning at all. I'd have been scraping hard parts if I'd flopped the Wing over like that. I did not scrape any of the shiny parts on the Magna tonight. I'm gonna get a feel for it first.

Sand and salt still covered the roadway, swept into piles in some spots. I shot the rear wheel out when I unexpectedly hit a patch of sand in a turn. Yee-haw! It'll be better after the weekend rains wash the winter sand and salt away.

But the bike did what I asked it to, what I needed it to do. It took all the accumulated stress since Dec 28 (my last ride before the snow fell) and blew it out that chrome 4-into-4 exhaust. This is what I've been missing. This is the only cure for PMS. (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome)

Memphis Slims for Honda Magna

I bought the shield and the mounting brackets from two different sellers on eBay. The shield finally arrived tonight and I installed it right away. I like the looks of it.

Time and a test drive will tell me whether I guessed right about the appropriate windshield height.

I tried a test fit on my wife's VF500C just to see and it does not fit -- rectangular headlight does not line up well with the brackets and the headlight cutout. There are other brackets specific to the VF500C that I will have to track down. My thoughts were to share the shield with my wife. Let her use it on our jaunts together -- she has more of a need for wind protection than me; I tolerate the cool air better than her. I would use the shield during the coolest commutes.

Note the width of the shield and the position of the front turn signals. A few websites have recommended the turn signal relocation kit when installing the Memphis Slims on the Magna, but I feel that the turn signals are still adequately visitble. The shield does encroach on the top fraction of the signal, but I don't feel this is a significant impairment of the signal's visibility.

Jezebel

I think my red V45 told me her name today. As she backfired on start up. This is a new behavior and indicates she's feeling worse than last week. She did get me to SME and back without incident, and some days she obviously feels better than others. but today she told me her name.

Jezebel. Red-haired bitch. Either this weekend on on the 4th I'm gonna tear into the carbs for a fourth attempt, plus install the DRP shims. Probably install an inline fuel filter while I'm at it.

If that doesn't fix her, I may cut my losses and dump her in the river. (Or, in biblical terms, feed her to wild dogs...)

First Ever SME

I attended my first ever SME (Sab-Mag Event) at Burr Oak State Park in Glouster, OH on 6/22 through 6/24. This is the same annual event I attempted to attend last year and ended up cooking my V30 on the way. (See Ravens Last Flight)

I managed to take a few pictures with my camera phone. I saw others snapping photos with far better cameras than mine, so I'm looking forward to those pictures.
