Perhaps to avoid public humiliation, Kawasaki has termed their recent recall of the "ZX-10R" a "technical hold."
The terms of the "hold" are actually more stringent than any ordinary recall. Rather than recalling the bikes for repair, they are recalling the US-spec ZX-10R for a refund. Owners will be given dibs on a replacement bike once the technical hold is released.
What could be the root cause of this? Something more serious than a faulty starter or failure-prone rectifier. Must be something catastrophic to prompt the manufacturer to issue refunds to the buyers...

Probably something in all of the wacky, overrated, not needed, electronics. I may work in a tech field but I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to adding too much technology to motorcycles. Pretty soon it won't take any skill to ride one.
ReplyDeleteI hear you. While I might be softening my "luddite" ways a little when it comes to motorcycles, I am still suspicious of all the fancy features on modern motorcycles. It used to be the do-it-yourself home mechanic could fix anything that went wrong on a bike.
ReplyDeleteElectronic ignition and fuel injection are okay by me. You can still adjust the fuel mixture with the right tools. But throttle by wire and smart ABS/traction control makes the rider rely on the equipment, not themselves.
ReplyDeleteKawasaki finally went public with their description of the problem. Visordown has the story.
