K&N Filter?

Okay, so I admit -- should have thought of this before I rejetted the carbs, but should I install the high-flow K&N air filter to go with my Dave Dodge shims and jets? Jets are up to 105 from stock 100. Exhaust is still stock and I plan to keep it that way, unless free Vance & Hines pipes are parachuted into my back yard.

It's running rich now.

And, holy cow, the K&N Filter costs more than the Jet kit.

Anyone have experience with the K&N filters and can you recommend for/against them.

  1. The 105 main jets are too big for the unmodified stock exhaust. You should add a .020" shim to each needle to richen up the midrange for use with the K&N filter, and shimming helps low-end with a clean stock filter too.

I install K&N filters on everything I work on. It's cleanable and re-useable. The stock paper filter starts getting clogged under the snorkle at about 4K miles. The K&N allows for better distribution of air flow across the entire filter so you can go 10K between cleanings. The stock filter is $36.00 and you throw it away... the K&N is $60.00, cleanable and the last filter you will buy.

The only thing that changes between using a stock filter and the K&N AFTER you install the shims is the pilot screw setting. The kits were developed before the K&N's were available, and we recommend different pilot screw settings depending on which aftermarket muffler you might be using. Using the K&N with shims and stock exhaust is still good for a power increase... from 74.5 HP stock to 77

  2. Should I ditch the 105 jets until after I install COBRA exhaust?

  3. I have heard that 105s are good with kn filter and stock or modded stock exhaust. 108s are good for kn filter and aftermarket exhaust.

I heard this from a tech at factory pro. Check them out www.factorypro.com.

I would keep the jets, they're not hurting anything

  4. I was interested in your comments about re-jetting the 3rd Generation Magna. Mine is
running lean, popping on deceleration but I have no idea what jets are in it. The previous owner installed Vance and Hines pipes but they are too loud for my taste.

Does anyone have a recommendation on what jets should be installed with the V&H exhaust or a source to find out?

    Hmm, wanna swap exhausts?

  5. I appreciate the offer, but If v+h pipes are that loud, I'll stick with stock. Nobody would want my stock pipes ... They're blue and black from lean running back before I cleaned the carbs in '07.

    Functional but fugly.

After what lean running did to my stock pipes, I wouldn't run my after-market pipes (or anything) lean for any length of time. I'd pull the carbs at my earliest oppty, and see what was there in terms of jets and shims.

  6. You are better running a bit rich than lean. The K&N Filter should let in a bit more air to help you to get it close to right. Just be careful to not be to generous with the sticky oil because it will accumulate on things down stream. At least there is no MAS air sensor to worry about getting gummed up. (This happens with the K&N on my SX4, so I have been told) Use Bob's exhaust analyzer to get it close.
