Safety Reminder: What Will You Find Around The Bend
There's a safety lesson here. Be prepared for what you might find around the corner. In this case, the rider didn't find a pothole, a downed tree, or a stalled vehicle. He rounded a corner and found himself facing a radar gun.
His reaction was his mistake. See what he did, and decide now how you're going to handle it when it happens to you.
That is a good post. Last year I was going down the main road of our neighborhood. It is 30mph but feels like it should be about 45mph. As I came around a hill with a slight curve doing around 45mph, there was a cop sitting there. A bad maneuver could have caused a problem. I just eased off the gas and looked at him and shook my head. He let me go. :-) Sometimes it is just too late to do anything to prevent a ticket, and if you try, it will bite you like this guy.
I think that the "startle response" is particularly tough to recover from. In this rider's case he was startled by the cop. For me, recently I was riding and had a bee land on my chin. Without thinking, I swatted it off. To do so, I took both hands off the handlebars. I was in traffic, and the car in front of me was stopping. I managed to get both hands back on the grips and get the bike stopped before I rear-ended the car in front of me. After it was done I was thinking, "What the heck was I thinking -- taking both hands off the bars like that." The answer, of course, is that I wasn't thinking, I was acting with a reflex or a startle response.
